Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat is the largest of all the temples here in Siem Reap. It took only 36 years to complete. It was built in the 12'th century. The scale and detail is beyond description. The king at the time ( I can't remember his name) hired an amazing architect who along with the high priests designed this place of worship. There were over a million people who worked on it's construction. Angkor was the capital of Cambodia until the mid 1500's when it moved to Phnom Penh because of the trade routes. The religion for the temple started out as Hindo but it became Buddist. Cambodia today is primarily all Buddist.

That is the Angkor Wat temple beyond the west entrance gate. This moat was hand dug of course and is 100 meters wide and goes around the entire temple. That must have been a full time job for many of those laborers back in 1100.

This is the largest carved relief in the world. It is over a kilometer when including all four sides.

One of the towers inside the main temple

  1. LOL what a contrast... ancient stone temple vs lush modern hotel... and so many other contrasts too... like the poor living in huts vs comfortable homes like Michael's... how'd you get used to this dichotomy?
